This is one of several gaps in the wall surrounding the Noel-Baker Peace Garden by Hornsey Rise that enable you to see inside when the garden is closed. Philip Noel-Baker, CH, politician, academic and diplomat, won a Silver Medal at the 1920 Olympics and a Nobel Peace Prize in 1959. He was a conscientious objector from 1916 yet received military medals from France, Italy and the UK for his service to the Ambulance Unit. He held numerous important posts in his various fields, married and had a son, Francis, with whom he served in the House of Commons at the same time - both were Labour MPs. His mistress was the daughter of David Lloyd George. He became a life peer.
